Halladay has strong outing, Victorino leaves after collision

Final Score: Philadelphia 4, Boston 1

Reigning NL Cy Young winner Roy Halladay went 7 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and struck out six, as the Phillies topped the Red Sox, 4-1, in Grapefruit League play.

Josh Barfield hit a two-RBI single in the sixth while Raul Ibanez and Michael Martinez both knocked in a run for Philadelphia. Ryan Madson was credited for a save for finishing out the eighth and allowing one hit in the ninth.

Jon Lester, the Red Sox opening day starter, was charged for four runs -- three earned -- on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Jed Lowrie scored on Drew Sutton's sacrifice fly in the fifth to account for Boston's only run.

Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino left the game in the top of the fifth inning after colliding with Ibanez on a routine fly ball. Victorino was cut above his left eye, and departed a short time later.

MLB: Even With Walking Wounded, Phillies String Together Win Streak

Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images
It seems as if injuries are the storyline of the season for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Chase Utley is still a few weeks from returning from the disabled list with his surgically repaired thumb, Jimmy Rollins was benched yesterday with a foot injury, and to top it all off, outfielder Shane Victorino was pulled in the seventh inning with a strained muscle in his left side.

Weeks ago, I preached to the Phillies collective that the describing word for the Phillies was inconsistency, and it still may be, but in this recent six game winning streak, the buzz word must be resilience.

The resilience of a roster that has not been whole in months. The resilience that had one of the best pitchers in the league, Ubaldo Jimenez, running for the showers. The team did this on the back of a pitcher just who was demoted to the minors just days before. J.A. Happ, who hadn't pitched in the majors since April, scrounged for a victory on Sunday just days after replacing Jamie Moyer in the starting rotation.

Halladay Shines in 9-0 Romp Of Toronto

(6/25/2010)

Philadelphia, PA - This game was supposed to be Roy Halladay's return to Toronto—a chance for the Phillies to visit Rogers Stadium to make a statement with their new ace—but due to the G-20 summit, Halladay invited his former team to Philly and played host in a stellar seven innings of work to lead the Phillies in a 9-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park.

Halladay (9-6) allowed no runs on six hits and struck out four in the win. He was assisted from the unlikely source of first baseman Ross Gload who went 3-for-4 with four RBI.

Unlikley Heroes: Phils have surprise leaders in 7-1 win over Yankees.

(New York, NY) Coming into tonight's interleague series finale the Phillies were just hoping to escape the Bronx with a win. The tea, sent struggling righty Kyle Kendrick to the mound to take on the always dangerous Andy Pettitte.

Little did the Phillies know that not only would their bats come alive but so would their gloves, as the game was a defensive showcase for the Phils.

Shane Victorino, whom was on a 1/17 slump in the last two series, went 2-3 including a two-run homerun to lead the Phillies offense.

The Phillies got the offense started in the fourth as Ryan Howard roped a one out single to right field that scored Shane Victorino from second base.

Victorino matched Howard one inning later with his two out homerun to right that gave the Phillies an early 2-0 lead.

Bronx Bombed: Phils lose rematch 8-3.

(New York, NY) Nick Swisher drilled a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to lead a Yankees assault on Roy Halladay  as the Bronx Bombers hammered the Phillies 8-3 at Yankees Stadium.

Swisher finished 2-5 with a double and the two-run home run. He was one of three Yankees to go deep on Halladay as the Phillies ace only lasted six innings, allowing six runs on eight hits.

Brett Gardener got the Yanks on the board first in the bottom of the second with a one-out triple to center field that scored Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada.

Phillies, Victorino agree on $22 million dollar deal

This is an Examiner.com piece to read the original CLICK HERE

A day after signing starting pitcher Joe Blanton to a three-year $24 million dollar deal, the Philadelphia Phillies settled their arbitration with center fielder Shane Victorino today, agreeing to a three-year $22 million dollar contract.

The two time gold glover will make an estimated $5 million dollars this year as well as $7.5 and $9.5 million in following years. The deal secures the 26 year old until 2012.

Victorino hit .292 with 62 RBI last season for the Phils and finished with 10 home runs.
This leaves Carlos Ruiz as the only Phillies player in arbitration and the club hopes to sign Ruiz to a long term deal within the next week.

These arbitration hearings are crucial for the team as they prepare for a potentially expensive off-season next year when first baseman Ryan Howard and outfielder Jayson Werth are free-agent eligible.
